چکیده

During Leg 185 two deep-water sites will be drilled, one seaward of the Mariana Trench (Ocean Drilling Program Hole 801C) and one seaward of the Izu-Bonin Trench (Site BON8A). The primary objectives are to investigate sediment subduction along this arc-trench system and to characterize the chemical fluxes during alteration of the oceanic crust. Despite the simple setting and shared subducting plate, there are still clear geochemical differences between the Marianas and Izu volcanic arc systems. Drilling the crustal inputs (sediments and basalts) can help test whether geochemical contrasts in the volcanics derive from contrasts in the crustal inputs to the two trenches. Previous drilling has already provided sections through the sedimentary layer approaching the Mariana Trench. Drilling during Leg 185 will provide samples of the remaining input fluxes to the subduction zones: the upper 300-500 m of altered basaltic crust at Hole 801C, and the sediments (500-600 m) and upper 300-400 m of basaltic crust at Site BON-8A. With Hole 801C, the science party will also provide the first reference site for the structure and composition of old Pacific (Jurassic), fast-spreading oceanic crust to compare with other crustal end-members (e.g., young-slow, young-fast, and old-slow). One outcome of Leg 185 will be the best existing mass balance of input and output fluxes for several key tracers (H2O, CO2, U, and Pb) cycled through the subduction factory.

Leg 185 Preliminary Report

Subduction zones are the primary regions on Earth today where crust recycling takes place, and through geological time they have been the sites of continent formation. Many of the key elements (e.g., Th, rare earth elements, Ba, and Be) that are important in understanding crustal growth are sequestered in the sedimentary column and in the uppermost oxidized portions of the volcanic section of o...

The Effects of Backpack Weight on the Static and Dynamic Balances of Female Students

The main aim of this study was to investigate the effects of carrying backpack on the balance of female students aged 9-11 years. In the present study, 30 students (mean age of 15.02±2.07 years, height of 140±8 cm, and weight of 41.51±15.26 kg and body mass index of 20.68±5.39 kg/m2) were randomly selected. Their static and dynamic balances were evaluated using singl...

Crustal structure in the northwestern part of the Izu collision zone in central Japan

The Izu-Bonin arc (IBA) has been colliding with the Honshu arc since the middle Miocene, which together form the active Izu arc-arc collision zone (ICZ) in central Japan. To understand the entire collisional system, we have used refraction/wide-angle reflection data to model velocity structures of the Honshu arc, northwest of the ICZ. The seismic data indicate that the upper 4-km crust of the H...

Ocean Drilling Program Leg 170 Scientific Prospectus Costa Rica Accretionary Wedge

To gain a better understanding of the mechanical and chemical behavior of accretion and underplating and tectonic erosion and to determine how deformation and dewatering are distributed throughout an accretionary prism, it is essential to establish the flow pattern of materials through subduction systems. Leg 170 consists of a program of drilling at four primary sites (proposed Sites CR-1 throu...

51. Formation and Destruction of the Eratosthenes Seamount, Eastern

The first of two tectonic-oriented objectives during Leg 160 in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea (April–May, 1995) was concerned with study of processes of genesis and incipient collision of the Eratosthenes Seamount, a substantial crustal feature, with the active margin of the Eurasian plate to the north, represented by southern Cyprus. The upper part of the Eratosthenes Seamount (upper several h...
